Blake Geissbuhler is a resident of Humboldt County, CA. With over a decade of cultivation experience under his belt he decided to pursue a degree from Humboldt State University in Forestry and Soil Science.

My academic goals include expanding my knowledge of organic cultivation practices, a greater understanding on the foundations of ecology and hydrology, and an appreciation for the arts and humanities which will help me in my devotion to protecting our Natural Resources.

Extensive background in conifer & plant identification/cultivation, general plant nerd. I know how to use ArcMap, ENVI, Excel, Word. I am a competent backcountry hiker and outdoor enthusiast. 

Experience:

Undergraduate Research Assistant: Arcata, CA ~ May 2018 – September 2018

Under the direction of Dr. Harold Zald, I worked on a team collecting tree cores as part of a graduate study to connect GIS data with climate change. Sites included plots on Green Diamond land as well as numerous national forests across NW California.  Basic tree measurements were collected (species, height, distance, azimuth) and recorded for each tree, data was carefully logged and transferred weekly to the lab headquarters at HSU. A core was then collected from each tree, and navigation was done to and from plots using map and compass or with GPS receivers. 

Forest Lakes Nursery: Fortuna, CA ~ January 2018 – May 2018

Primary role was to perform any and all general labor for a small locally owned specialty conifer nursery.  Duties included transportation, inventory, transplanting, irrigation work, general farm labor, plant propagation and light construction work.

Brio Breadworks: Arcata, CA ~ April 2017 – November 2017

Primary function was as a delivery driver.  Duties included packing bread, loading orders, delivering orders in an accurate and timely fashion, maintaining a clean vehicle, proper handling of invoices and cash or check sales, customer service and expo of bread from the retail location.  Part of the shifts were janitorial in nature, spent cleaning the entire bakery to the highest food grade standards.

Black Dog Ranch: Strawberry Valley, CA ~ July 2014 – April 2017

Property Manager and Nursery Manager for a medical cannabis farm with 10,000 square feet of active greenhouse canopy.  Duties included: land management, light forestry work, fire mitigation techniques, greenhouse construction, irrigation system construction, soil bed preparation, plant propagation, indoor plant care, transplanting, foliar sprays, compost tea application, amending soil, plant maintenance, harvest preparation and planning, harvest supervision, processing supervision, packaging, production analysis and market development.

Organic Alternatives: Fort Collins, CO ~ September 2013 – July 2014

Assistant Grower for a medical cannabis dispensary warehouse (~200,000 watts in flower rooms).  Duties included: room construction, painting, propagation and transplanting, feeding, watering, foliar sprays, plant maintenance, harvest prep and planning, harvest, processing, organization, systems maintenance, janitorial duties, some customer service and packaging at the retail location.

Six Dog Farms: Wellington, CO ~ March 2013 – Sept 2013

Intern for a small organic egg farm and vegetable/fruit CSA.  Duties included: animal care (chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl and peacocks), pasture maintenance, general property care, crop planting, weed control, crop harvest and processing, crop delivery.  In addition, some time was spent working at the owner’s home / garden center in Cheyenne, WY. Duties at the farm center were largely customer service and plant care.
